The reason why habits are so hard to break is because of Autopilot.
So, how do we overcome them?
The key is, to only tackle a new skill for as long as you can keep Autopilot from taking over. This is your Muscle Memory Limit.
For instance, if you are working on correcting your bow hold, then only play say, 2 notes with your new bow hold. That way, you keep it from falling apart. If you play too many notes, Autopilot will kick in and you’ll end up just reinforcing the old bow hold.
Once you feel secure playing 2 notes, increase your Muscle Memory Limit to 4 notes. Keep doing this until the new bow hold is automatic, and is ingrained in your muscle memory.
The fundamental basis to the Muscle Memory Trainer is to avoid doing the wrong thing, and only do the right thing. The is also the fundamental basis of the Magic Speed Limit.
And remember, just like the Magic Speed Limit, if you cheat, it doesn’t work. So, don’t try to play more than you can. You can’t trick your muscle memory!
